When I met Benebell she told me non to buy this volume, she told me that as an experienced tarot reader I didn't really need her book. But after spending some time with her and knowing how she teaches I couldn't not buy the book.

Oh my... I'yard so glad I didn't mind to her. This is hands down the best Tarot book I've always read. Y'all really don't need any other book besides this one whether you are a beginner or, like me, are an experienced reader. As I've been reading I've added a scattering of ideas from the book to the readings I'one thousand doing and only those few techniques have made a wild difference in my readings. I definitely didn't demand the whole book, simply what I did get from it was well worth the investment of both time and coin to sit with information technology.

I've been reading the book by scanning through the table of contents and reading what I want to know more almost at the fourth dimension, eating slowly through the whole book in a random gild. And this is actually how I'd recommend reading information technology. A brand new beginner with tarot could learn from this book on the proviso that they don't attempt to read the whole book through. Instead a beginner should begin with the commencement 3rd or so of the volume and piece of work with that fabric start going back to the book over and over equally they're prepare to aggrandize their readings. While an experienced reader will probably spring in later in the book picking the ideas that are calling to them. It'southward definitely non the kind of book I'd set out to read from cover to cover in a few sittings.

I believe this is the but five star review I take given so far and this has hands become The Tarot Book I'll be recommending (except for newbies who are hands overwhelmed).

By that definition, I am against divination, too."

I but don't go this book. The writer (who calls herself a Contained Metaphysician) is very sure of her self and her opinions. I am not a fan.

The volume itself is a mix of a manual for commercial fortunetelling and (based on) former public domain books on tarot. You can find all of these for complimentary online, the books she used are even on her site. (to run across what a transmission for commercial fortunetellers looks similar, google: tarot manual pdf switchboard. )

For learning to read tarot I would not recommend the belittling, intellectual approach you lot will find in this book.

I consider myself a fortuneteller. Have read cards for 25 years. I do not pretend to be a passenger vehicle, therapist or adviser.

One star for the pretty cover.

[four.5 stars] This is a book intended for tarot readers at all levels of experience, beginner to advanced, and it meets that goal. Every bit you'd look, the bulk of the book covers beginner material, with meaty capacity on bones menu meanings and layouts, The latter has good word of a diverseness of spreads, including standards similar the Three-Card Spread and the Celtic Cross (of grade!), but in that location is also good coverage of uncommon spreads.

So Wen's book covers the basics, but with almost 900 pages to play with, she gets to write almost a lot of non-so-bones stuff as well. I was intrigued by her chapter on the 5 Components of Circumstance: "the factors that determine what happens to y'all." Wen explains which cards correspond to which of the components, helping the practitioner (reader) place the ones that are strongest in any given reading, which in turn tin can be used to help the Seeker (querent). There's also a affiliate on the First Functioning, a pre-reading technique dating dorsum to the 1930's that a practitioner tin use to identify the groundwork issues in a reading. For those who want to really stretch their tarot muscles, the chapter on the Opening of the Key spread (or "spreads:" it's a five-phase process) presents a worthy challenge. Other chapters cover reading for yourself, helping Seekers handle downbeat readings, an overview of the business organization and legal aspects of professional tarot reading, ethics, how to handle inappropriate questions, and how to blueprint your own readings. And more. Lots more. Like I said, it's almost 900 pages long. But I thought Wen's writing style was quite readable, a piffling formal in places, yep, but hey, she's as well a lawyer. If you similar getting to know an author before plunging into their volume, skip to the final affiliate, "A Personal Essay: How I Started," before tackling the balance of the book.

I don't usually annotate on the physical aspects of a volume, only I exercise have a few things to say nearly this one. This book is at the outer limits of what a standard paperback bounden tin handle, and if it bothers you lot to have the spine crevice, you'll need to either read this very carefully or choose the e-book. (There are a lot of illustrations and tables, though, which are sometimes difficult to read in e-format.) This is reasonably priced for a book this large, but I would've been willing to spend a flake more for a more than durable binding. This is a volume I'll want to refer to a lot in the future, and I just don't know how well it's going to hold up.

"Tarot is a mirror. It reflects back who yous are. It shows yous your strengths and weaknesses. Information technology makes you confront the decisions you accept made in the by, your attitude, both good and bad, and how these components have afflicted your life."

What sold me on Holistic Tarot very early on was that Wen's approach to tarot is belittling and not *woo-woo* in nature. I loved that she describes it as "tarot analytics" and compares a tarot reading to making a mind map. Equally I've been creating mind maps aplenty recently, and I am drawn to the analytical, this seemed like the perfect volume for me!

Holistic Tarot is comprehensive and exceptionally thorough. Whether you're completely new to tarot or a seasoned practitioner, there is something (many somethings) for you in this book. Everything is well laid out and the chapters follow a logical and polish progression from ane topic to some other. You lot'll encounter a plethora of reference charts, spreads, techniques, and things to consider from multiple perspectives.

"Don't use the tarot only considering you want to know what will happen side by side or you might lose sight of what is happening at present. Instead, employ the tarot to understand why and how. You lot influence your future through action and attitude, not through cards."

Each affiliate is illustrated with images, just also with instance readings to assistance aggrandize upon the ideas and suggestions. There are even chapters on devising your ain spreads, in depth operations, and things to consider if you program to practise tarot professionally. I found the breadth and depth of advice and reference data in this book impressive!

So far, I've tried out many of the techniques and spreads in this book, but there is still so much more that I plan to delve into for a long fourth dimension to come! In fact, when information technology'southward my plough to host my "tarot book club" meeting, I'll exist sharing some of what I learned in Holistic Tarot!

This is absolutely the BEST tarot resource I've found.

I'thousand seriously because getting the ebook version as well, so I can have information technology with me everywhere I go! Highly recommended for anyone interested in the tarot.

You'll take to be motivated to read through various capacity and be willing to skip more advanced and confusing things. Wen's basic proffer for beginners is to slog through a couple hundred pages of the meanings of each of the 78 cards in the deck and essentially memorize them before starting to lay out spreads and read them. That'south swell if you take the patience and fortitude to do that, but that'south non how I larn. I think information technology will be incredibly helpful to take this Cycolpedia of Meanings, but I can't imagine sitting down to memorize it before using the cards. I'll never get started.

I guess for me Wen too never dove into the stuff I was interested in. She gave a cursory history, just didn't do much around the Golden Dawn (who exactly are they? what was their purpose? why exactly are they important to tarot?). I want to connect with the history and tradition and know about it. Moreover the subtitle is most using tarot for personal growth and at that place was virtually nothing about how tarot is applicable to delving into yourself. There's a very short chapter on reading for yourself which I wish had been much longer and more than in depth virtually good spreads to employ and any advice there. I get the impression she more often than not reads for others, which I currently have no interest in doing.

This is a good volume, though. I appreciate Wen'due south approach and her matter of fact style. She's a little spiritual, merely she'southward mixed information technology in with a diverseness of ideas nigh spirituality from various traditions that make sense and offer a lot to the practice of tarot. And as I said, the book is through. If y'all want a one-stop-store of a book about Tarot this is it. There's material hither for years of tarot written report.

I will too add together, purchase a Passenger-Smith-Waite deck of cards to go along with this every bit it'due south the one she walks you lot through using. I call back it would have been amend if I had one (I have three other different decks) to use. This one book I've received, Holistic Tarot by Benebell Wen has really helped me feel a fleck more than comfortable with understanding tarot cards, purpose, and all the interesting things that tin't be always found in a deck of cards with a small, slim guide. In addition to the in-depth info, I besides heard so many good reviews of this book. So why non have a gamble, especially when information technology's a huge, 800 plus folio volume.

Since I only got through ane-third of the book, trying to remember and empathise everything before going on. However, I did skim most and will be revisiting those pages soon. What I got from what I've read and skimmed through, is that information technology'south making me feel well familiar with the cards and what the departure is from the opposite to the original confront of the card. Equally the face of the cards tin can change the meaning of the original estimation of the card. Plus, with the details on each carte and what keywords they represent when seen in the layout, you tin get an honest and true read to help provide guidance on the questions y'all or another wants to have answered.

In addition to learning about the cards, I am still trying to slowly read each item on the cards, choosing the right one, and understanding each of the different layouts to use. I want to brand sure the information sticks. Since my fears begin with non knowing and agreement the cards and the meanings in a certain layout or just on their own. Since it never always means what it might present every bit the photo you see. Plus, I've never seen a book with so many pages that explains tarot completely.

In addition to learning all the things about tarot and how it works, the main purpose is that I want to be able to know what to await and what to approve before the worse appear information technology's ugly caput. Also, to help others know that they have more to wait forwards likewise and what to picket out for equally well. These cards can really make one break that door downwards that is always shut in the mind and permit ane to open to the knowledge of what is going on in their lives and volition occur. Sort of similar seeing pass the present and acknowledging what is to come.

Finally, every bit with many means to provide divination, tarot reading is quite a wonderful approach to growing much clarity into the world around us. Her tone is sometimes condescending. And for someone who incorporates a multifariousness of religious philosophy into tarot, her descriptions of the cards are oddly rigid and traditional. I definitely disregarded much of it. The final chapter was her personal story, which for me, felt similar the missing key that finally connected her disjointed writing vocalisation (which alternated between humble, forceful, jaded, snobby, professorial, pompous, and aristocratic). Wish this chapter had been the Introduction. ...more

It includes a little flake of everything and is definately a good sourcebook at jumping off point for more detailed studies. A comprehensive book for all level of Tarot reader. The book provided a companion website, so that yous can visit information technology for a reference or a worksheet. Not truly done with this volume, merely I don't think you really can be, since it seems like more of an encyclopedic reference than a volume you merely read from outset to cease. She offers groovy communication no matter where y'all are in your tarot journey, and incorporates nuances from the I Ching, Astrology, and other areas. Lots of charts and tables, which I like.
